Mason does the Farmer's Market
So last night, Sarah and I loaded up Mason and took him to the farmers market. This farmer's market is one of the coolest things around during the summer - it's basically like an old time fairy with not just produce and such, but lots of booths selling hot food (hamburgers, Navajo tacos, buffalo burgers, fries, cheese curds, etc) and lots of places selling crafts, flowers, fresh maple syrup, milk, etc etc. There are swings and play equipment for the kids and lots of benches and picnic tables and every week, they draw a HUGE crowd.
The first thing Mason did when we got there was throw up all over himself and his car seat, which just figured since I had taken his bib off just moments before. We cleaned him up as best we could and off we went. He absolutely LOVED the sensation of his stroller bouncing along on the dirt paths and smiled away. It was no surprise that he was quickly asleep. His hat fell off his head and covered half of his face and it was the cutest thing ever. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture since I was too busy deciding what to have for supper!
Both Sarah and I ended up buying a huge beautiful exotic daisy plant for our gardens and then it was time to get our eating on! The burger booth for some reason didn't make an appearance, which was a disappointment since I'm not brave enough to try bison burgers. Sarah had a Navajo taco and cheese curds and I just ended up getting french fries and a pop. I was amazed to see them actually peeling potatoes right in the booth - no crap out of a bag there! We were going to make a second round for homemade ice cream and funnel cakes, but about that time, Little Man woke up and decided he was NOT happy.
This was Mason's first public meltdown. And meltdown it was. He wouldn't take his Nuk and screamed bloody murder. Even after I took him out of his carseat (his carseat attaches to his stroller) and carried him and bounced him and rocked him, he kept screaming and people started staring. Now, I could give two figs that people were staring, except I felt totally inept because I had NO CLUE how to quiet him down. I'd done the obvious (offered his Nuk, took him out of the carseat, checked his diaper, walked around with him, changed his position a dozen times) and he was having none of it. He cried long enough that he made a few other babies at the market start crying too, which kind of made me laugh - at least I wasn't alone with the crying baby then!
At about the time we gave up and decided to bring him home, he stopped crying and fell back asleep. Go figure. We stopped in the little store they have on the property and Sarah bought fresh cheese curds and some licorice bites while I struggled to get the giant stroller down the very tiny aisles.
I picked up the lemon meringue pie that P had requested and then realized that I didn't have enough cash on me to buy the big container of raspberries I'd wanted, so we called it a night. By the time we got to the car, Mason was totally out and didn't wake up until we got home.
Despite the crying, I think it was a fairly successful trip and we'll definitely go again in a few weeks. Only next time, I'll take more pictures!
